Water makes earth the “blue” planet; visually unique from all others in the solar system. Water is said to be the liquid of life & a universal solvent because it can dissolve more substances than any other liquid. It is not a coincidence that water is tasteless, odourless & colourless, neither is it a coincidence that changes in temperature can reversibly change water from a solid to a liquid & to a gas (vapour). A frozen pond warming in the winter sun may show all three phases at once. Indeed, the uncreated creator has specially designed water for a multipurpose function & has presented it as a sign for those who want to reflect. Water is one of the most important substances on earth that all humans, plants & animals must have to survive. If there was no water there would be no life on earth. With 2/3rd of the earth’s surface covered by water and the human body consisting of 75% of it, it is evidently clear that water is one of the prime elements responsible for life on earth.

Water circulates through the land just as it does through the human body, transporting, dissolving, and replenishing nutrients and organic matter, while carrying away waste material. We can go for weeks without food, but only about 3 days without water!. An average adult body contains 42 litres of water and with just a small loss of 2.7 litres he or she can suffer from dehydration & death. Traditional & modern medicine have been making use of the psychological & physiological diverse properties of water, in all forms of hydrotherapy. Some plants & animals contain a great amount of water – a jellfish is 95% water, watermelon contains 97% water. Most fishes & other aquatic creatures can only live when completely covered with water. Some amphibians lay eggs in water, desert kangaroo rat, seldom drank water but survive by eating seeds, plants, and metabolizing fat to produce water.

Its importance can never be over emphasised. It is indeed one of the blessings of Allah that we take for granted. Sources of water are numerous e.g. rain, ocean, wells, rivers, springs etc. Today, the water is polluted with hundreds of toxins & impurities. Our natural heritage (rivers, seas & oceans) has been exploited, mistreated and contaminated.

“(Allah) is the One Who sends forth the winds like heralds of His Mercy. When they have carried the heavy-laden clouds, We drive them to a dead land. Then We cause water to descend and thereby bring forth fruits of every kind. Thus We will bring forth the dead. Maybe you will remember.” [Q7:57]. “Have you observed the water you drink? Do you bring it down from the rainclouds? Or do We? If it were Our will, We could make it  bitter (salty). Then why are you not thankful?” [Quran 56: 68-70]. Have those who disbelieved not considered that the heavens and the earth were a joined entity, and We separated them and made from water every living thing? Then will they not believe? (Q21:30), [50:9-11][23: 18-19][15:22][30:48] (24:45) (Q25:54).

Considering many thought provoking verses of the Qur’an, the time of their revelation and also the newly discovered scientific facts regarding  water and its individual properties, it strikes a chord deep within us. The fact that all life originated from water would not have been an easy thing to convince people fourteen centuries ago. Proof of that was not available until the invention of the microscope. We had to wait to find out that cytoplasm, the basic substance of the cell, is made-up of 80% water. Nonetheless, the evidence did come, and once again, the Qur’an stood the test of time. Every sincere truth seeker will certainly feel compelled to admit the authenticity of the Qur’an as a wonderful miracle from God Almighty, being revealed to Muhammed, the unschooled prophet who came to complete the message of Islam brought by all other prophets. “So which of the favours of your Lord would you deny?” (Q 55). Stay tuned for part 2 where Japanese & German scientists reveal secrets of Zam Zam water. Not to be missed.
